Project Description:

The sixty-year-old Tungabhadra Project is a multipurpose river valley project serving irrigation, electricity generation, flood control, etc. The Project comprises of a Dam with 133 TMC of Gross storage Capacity, 4 main canals namely Left Bank Canal, Left Bank High Level Canal, Right Bank Canal, and Right Bank High Level Canal proposed to irrigate 3, 62,783 ha of land by utilizing 133.00 TMC of water. It is also proposed to generate 99 MW of power from 11 units.

Out of above canals, Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal is constructed to irrigate 2, 43,900 ha of lands coming under Koppal and Raichur Districts. The Canal is 227 kms long having 89 Distributaries. But getting the required discharge in these distributaries has been difficult to obtain. The farmers closest to the supply point have indulged in the available water, violated the original localized cropping pattern and are now predominantly growing paddy instead of the designated crop types. Additionally, lands not originally deemed to be commanded or authorised for irrigation. Due to this, the atchkat of tail end reaches of many distributaries and tail end distributaries are suffering without water.

Distributary No.36 runs for a length of 41.3 Kms off takes at Ch. 75+660 of TLBC. Distributary No. 36 from Ch. 25+000 to Ch. 33+000 runs in contour where 3 higher patches are located on the command side. These higher patches are not irrigated from the existing Distributary-36 network. These higher patches fall under the following 5 villages i.e., Dhadesugur, Budhal, Salagunda, Kanari and Maladini.

These areas even though comes in the command area of Distributary-36 but not irrigated due to local higher patches. Majority of farmers in this villages belongs to SC/ST categories. These villagers are mainly depending on irrigation and hence there is a representation from the local farmers and elected representative to provide irrigation facility to these areas from Tungabhadra River. Noticing this, the MLA of Kanakagiri Constituency Sri. Basavaraj Dadesugur has represented to provide irrigation facility to these left out areas by lifting water from Tungabhadra River.

Accordingly, KNNL Engineers planned the scheme and prepared the DPR to provide individual small lift scheme for covering these uncommand areas. There is about 305 Ha of left out area in tail end reach of this distributary. Depending upon the topography, the higher patch area is divided in to three small blocks. The distance from Tungabhadra River to this high patch area is 6.681 Kms, 6.790 Kms and 5.285 Kms for Scheme-1, Scheme-2 and Scheme-3 respectively.

It is proposed to lift the water to 112 Ha, 89 Ha and 104 Ha of left out area which are located at different locations. If one scheme is proposed, the pipeline will have to cross saddles and existing command of Distributary-36 which will become uneconomic. Hence, it is proposed to provide three lift schemes to the left-

out area. The water is proposed to pump for 22 hours. This scheme is planned to be implemented and handed over to farmers group after 5 years of O & M.
