Client:

M/s Minor Irrigation and Ground Water Development Department

Project Description:

Kattebelthur is a small hamlet Village near Hemmadi Village in Kundapura Taluk, Udupi District of Karnataka State. A Saltwater Exclusion dam is constructed across the river Chakra. The Chakra River is a river flowing through Kundapur and Gungolli in western India. It joins with the Souparnika River, Varahi River and Kubja River known as Panchagangavali river and merges into the Arabian Sea.

The SWED is constructed near Hemmadi village for prevention or to retain saltwater from Arabian sea entering the fresh water of the Chakra River.

The Hemmadi village is a small Village in Kundapura Taluk,Udupi District of Karnataka State, India. It is located 44 KM towards North from District headquarters Udupi. 4 KM from Kundapura. 375 KM from State capital Bangalore.

The proposal of this dam serves the purpose of storage and protection of fresh water in the river by avoiding the saltwater intrusion from Arabian sea. This vented Dam was constructed 15years ago. It is proposed to provide Gates for the existing Vented dam. Also, to study the various option for improving the existing dam. The proposal of Gates for the vented dams with various option studies will help in prevention of saltwater entering to the fresh water.

The Existing SWE Vented Dam has a Storage Capacity of 199.23Mcft (0.199TMC) which is used for the multi purposes such as irrigation purpose, recharge of ground water etc. Water can be stored to a depth of 3.0 m from the crest level. However, at present the water is stored up to 2m. Further, it was length of storage of water is approximately 8 km. Wooden stop log gates are used to stop the water.

This process takes around ten days putting wooden stop logs & a month for filling the soil. On carrying this process, the exclusion of saltwater into fresh water is not reduced. Also, the scarcity of filling material is aroused. Further availability of wooden logs is difficult now a days. Hence it is proposed to replace wooden logs by advance FRP Gate technology.

The cost of the proposed Gate work to SWED out to be Rs 3065.00 Lakhs
